that's what friends are for.

my friends Emily and Ben took me to the zoo for my birthday.
we got to feed some birds and it was pretty amazing.
the experience was only heightened by seeing a container marked "monkey biscuits".

I don't know... this is whatever.

Karl Malden 1912 – 2009

I was probably 4 or 5 the first time I saw Pollyanna.
Karl Malden's performance scared the shit out of me.
But of course by the end of the movie he was a pretty likable guy.
It was my first time realization about the actual skill that some actors possess.
Of course I didn't grasp it like that when I was 5.
Then I probably though "He can pretend to be scary and good too...?"

Michael Joseph Jackson 1958 – 2009

“If you enter this world knowing you are loved and you leave this world knowing the same, then everything that happens in between can be dealt with.”

I'm not going to spend my life being a color.

So Michael Jackson is gone. Now I don't know why this week went the way it did, but it did.

On Sunday I was sitting here watching the Cosby Show. An episode in which Russell scores a handful of tickets to a sold-out Michael Jackson concert. Cliff and Claire opt to stay home and babysit the twins so Sondra and Elvin may go enjoy a night out of the house. Later when everyone returns home Elvin showers the twins and his in-laws with MJ souvenirs from the concert.

Strangely enough two days later the episode of the Simpson where Homer is in a Psych hospital with a man who thinks he is Michael Jackson aired.

So all week I thought about how this man had made the soundtrack to 99% of my childhood. How scary the Thriller video was. I wondered what happened to our toy MJ microphone and silver glitter glove. I remembered the time my sister was going to school and told me to stand on the front porch holding her new Michael Jackson poster so the other kids in the car could see it. How our VHS copy of "Moonwalker" was watched so many times the ribbon eventually snapped during "Smooth Criminal".

Regardless of any problems or accusations, this man was a dominant figure in popular culture around the world for the last 39 years, a global icon. He was utterly and completely talented.

It's such a disappointment that he wasn't able to make that final tour. It would have been a specular topper on his career and a standing reminder of his unparalleled stage performances. He will be sincerely missed, and I will remain sincerely thankful for his musical legacy.

K O D A C H R O M E

So Kodachrome has finally reached the end of it's run.

But an extra little titbit for some of us at the studio is what will happen with the last roll.

Kodak is donating the last several rolls to the George Eastman House, and one of those final rolls will be used by Steve McCurry (my boss).

The images made will then be donated to the Eastman House.

It's gonna to be a pretty big deal.

I'm really excited to see what we end up with.
